NEW LICENSE PLATE FOR VETERANS

Québec City, QC, November 10, 2005 — Québec Premier Jean Charest, along with Michel Després, Minister of Transport and MInister responsible for the Capitale-Nationale region, is proud to announce that, as of January 1, 2006, the Government of Québec will offer war veterans a license plate exclusive to them.

"This significant act today by the Government of Québec is done in order to acknowledge in a special way the dedication of the Quebecers who served under the flags of the nation to defend the values by which we live," said the Premier.

"This commemorative license plate exclusive to veterans will be identical to the plate currently issued in Québec, apart from the red and black poppy in the middle," explained the Minister of Transport, who asked the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec to do what was needed to offer this new plate to war veterans.

The plate will be available to anyone who meets the eligibility requirements determined by the Royal Canadian Legion.

The Premier pointed out that this announcement, on the eve of Remembrance Day 2005, marks the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II in a unique way.

Webmaster's remarks

As the eligibility will be screened by the Royal Canadian Legion, I researched the current process used in Ontario. A special application form must be completed and will then be verified by Legion staff and if the applicant meets the standards outlined below, the License Bureau will then be notified to issue the special plate. It is likely that the same process would be adopted here in Québec but the final outcome will be subject to the approval of Québec Provincial Command.

  • Must be a veteran of WW-I, WW-II or have served in Korea during the Korean War as a member of the Canadian Forces, as a member of an Allied Force, or in the Merchant Navy or Ferry Command;
  • Served a minimum of three years (1095 days paid duty) in the CF (may still be serving); [other factors such as the award of the CD may be used to validate entitlement]; and
  • Served in NATO or UN peacekeeping operations as: A member of the CF, the RCMP, another Canadian police force, or of an Allied force.
